Bubble World
Watara Supervision, 1992
Bubble World is a methodical, grid-based action-puzzle game that trades high-speed shooting for careful planning and environmental manipulation. Rather than clearing bubbles from the sky, you control a small character tasked with collecting all the "bubbles" (which look more like orbs or crystals) scattered throughout a series of multi-tiered, single-screen stages. Once every item is collected, an exit door opens, allowing you to advance to the next level.
The core gameplay revolves around navigating ladders and platforms while avoiding patrolling enemies. Your primary "weapon" is the ability to dig temporary holes in the floor to the left or right of your character. If an enemy falls into one of these pits, they become trapped for several seconds, allowing you to walk over their heads safely. If you’re fast enough, the hole will close on them, destroying the enemy and causing them to respawn elsewhere. However, if you fall into your own hole or get cornered by the AI, it’s an immediate loss of a life.
Because the Supervision’s screen was notorious for motion blur, Bubble World is actually one of the more "playable" games in the library. Since the action is tile-based and moves at a deliberate pace, the ghosting effect is minimal compared to the system's shooters or racers. The challenge lies in the level design; later stages require you to dig holes in specific sequences to drop down to lower levels or trap multiple enemies simultaneously. It’s a dry, cerebral experience that rewards patience over twitch reflexes, making it a solid "thinking man’s" title for the handheld.
