Microchess 2.0
Commodore PET, 1978
Microchess is a chess program designed for users to play against a low-level computer opponent. In its earlier versions, the game lacked video output; players entered moves via the keyboard using a custom notation, while the program responded in kind. Later iterations for various microcomputers introduced visual displays of the chessboard.
The program offers three different response speeds: it can either respond instantly, take 5 to 10 seconds to calculate a move, or spend enough time for a full game to last up to an hour. While determining its next move, the program analyses up to three plies ahead. Its playing strength is estimated to be at the level of a beginner, around 1100 Elo.
