Chinese Checkers
Watara Supervision, 1992
For a console that struggled to render a moving tank without turning it into a smudge, Chinese Checkers was actually a match made in heaven for the Watara Supervision. It is exactly what it says on the tin: a digital, portable version of the classic "Sternhalma" board game, designed for players who preferred a slow-burn strategy over the system’s often-blurry action titles.
The game is played on the traditional star-shaped board, where the goal is to move all ten of your marbles from your starting triangle to the opposite point of the star. Much like the physical version, the strategy revolves around "hopping." You can move a marble to an adjacent empty space, or you can jump over another marble (yours or an opponent's) into an empty space beyond it. Chain together a series of jumps, and you can cross half the board in a single turn.
Visually, the game is about as exciting as a spreadsheet, but it’s remarkably functional. The developers used the Supervision’s four shades of gray to distinguish between the different sets of marbles, often employing different dithering patterns (solid, striped, or hollow) so you wouldn't lose track of which piece belonged to whom. Because the game is entirely turn-based and static, it completely bypasses the hardware's notorious "ghosting" issues. You can take as long as you want to contemplate your move without the screen turning into a blurry mess, making it one of the few games on the system that feels truly polished in its presentation.
The AI is functional, if a bit predictable, offering a decent challenge for a solo player, though the game shines best as a low-stakes time-waster. It doesn't have the flashy animations or the catchy music of a Game Boy title, but it provided a reliable, "battery-sipping" experience for the older or more patient demographic Watara was trying to court. It’s a dry, academic inclusion in the library, but it stands as one of the most technically stable games the system ever produced.
