Donkey Kong Junior
Atari 7800, 1988
Donkey Kong Jr. is a platform game where the player controls Donkey Kongâs son, DK Jr., as he attempts to rescue his father from Mario. The game consists of four stages, each with a unique theme. DK Jr. can run left and right, jump, and climb vines, chains, or ropes to navigate the screen. He can climb faster by holding two vines or slide down by holding just one.
Enemies in the game include:
Snapjaws: Bear trap-like creatures with eyes.
Nitpickers: Bird-like enemies that sometimes drop eggs to attack.
Sparks: Electric creatures that move across the wiring in Mario''s hideouts.
DK Jr. can avoid enemies by jumping over them, switching between vines, or knocking down fruit to destroy them before the fruit falls off the screen.
To complete the first three stages, DK Jr. must reach the key hanging next to Donkey Kongâs cage. Mario will then flee, pushing the cage off the screen. In the fourth stage, DK Jr. must push six keys into locks to free Donkey Kong. After rescuing his father, the game returns to the first stage but at a higher difficulty.
A bonus timer runs during each stage, adding any remaining points to the playerâs score. DK Jr. loses a life if he touches an enemy, falls too far, touches the water, or if the bonus timer runs out. The game ends when all lives are lost.
