Balloon Fight
Watara Supervision, 1992
Balloon Fight for the Watara Supervision is an unauthorised, unlicensed clone of Nintendo's classic 1984 arcade and NES game of the exact same name. Developed for Watara's budget-friendly Game Boy competitor, this handheld bootleg attempts to mimic the core mechanics of the Nintendo original but introduces several noticeable changes to accommodate the hardware and its monochrome screen.
The basic premise remains identical to its namesake: you control a character suspended in the air by two balloons. The primary objective is to continuously flap around the screen and pop the balloons of floating bird-like enemies by landing squarely on top of them. If an enemy touches your balloons from above or the side, one of your balloons will pop. Losing both balloons causes your character to fall to their doom, costing you a life.
However, the Supervision clone deviates from the original game in several distinct ways. Instead of infinitely looping arcade-style progression, this version features a definitive campaign consisting of exactly 16 stages. The level designs are completely unique to this port and introduce new environmental hazards. Rather than dodging the giant fish lurking in the water of the NES version, players must avoid bottomless spike pits. The game also introduces air vents and fans that actively blow the player and the enemies in specific directions, adding a frustrating layer of challenge to the game's notoriously sluggish controls.
Enemy behavior is also simplified; once an enemy bird's balloon is popped, it immediately falls off the screen rather than deploying a parachute that requires a secondary attack. Time management is heavily incentivised, as clearing a stage under a certain time threshold rewards the player with a massive 10,000-point bonus.
If a player manages to conquer the physics and beat all 16 levels, the game unceremoniously ends with a static screen. This ending is highly regarded among retro gaming enthusiasts for its glorious, error-riddled "Engrish" message, which reads: "GAME CPMPLETE ! You have defiance all SIXTEEN STAGEs. CAN'T BELIEVE you DID IT, But you just did it !!!!! In the last We appreciate to buy BALLOON FIGHT that's has great meaning to our company. So, THANK YOU AGAIN ! PRESS ANY KEY.
