Space Ace is a LaserDisc video game created by Bluth Group, Cinematronics, and Advanced Microcomputer Systems (later known as RDI Video Systems). It was revealed in October 1983, just four months after the launch of Dragon''s Lair, with a limited release in December 1983 and a broader rollout in Spring 1984. Like its predecessor, it showcased high-quality animated sequences played from a LaserDisc. Gameplay resembles that of Dragon''s Lair, requiring players to manoeuvre the joystick or press the fire button at critical moments to control the hero''s actions. Players can also choose to temporarily transform the character into his adult form or keep him as a boy, each offering different challenges. While the arcade game was commercially successful in North America, it did not reach the same iconic status as Dragon''s Lair. It was subsequently adapted for various home gaming systems. Like Dragon''s Lair, Space Ace is made up of a series of individual scenes where players must move the joystick in the correct direction or press the fire button at the right time to help Dexter/Ace navigate various hazards. The game introduced several gameplay enhancements, including selectable skill levels and multiple paths through certain scenes. At the beginning, players can choose from three skill levels: "Cadet" for easy, "Captain" for medium, and "Space Ace" for hard. To experience all the game’s sequences, players must select the toughest skill level, as only about half of the scenes are available on the easiest setting. Many scenes feature "multiple choice" moments, allowing players to decide how to proceed, such as which direction to turn in a passageway or whether to respond to the on-screen "ENERGIZE" prompt to transform back into Ace. Additionally, most scenes have separate, horizontally flipped versions. Dexter typically progresses by dodging obstacles and enemies, while Ace takes a more aggressive approach, attacking foes instead of retreating. However, Dexter does occasionally need to use his pistol against enemies to advance. For example, in the game''s opening scene, Dexter must escape from Borf''s robotic drones. If the player presses the fire button at the right moment, Dexter can temporarily transform into Ace and fight the drones; otherwise, he must avoid their drill attacks while remaining in his Dexter form.
