In Ikari Warriors, players control two commandos—Colonel Ralf Jones (red) and Second Lieutenant Clark Still (blue)—who must fight their way through hostile territory to reach the village of Ikari. The enemies they face include tanks, enemy soldiers, and helicopters, all of which attempt to kill them. Along the way, players can collect power-ups to aid in their journey. The gameplay involves navigating from the bottom of the screen to the top while facing various enemy units. Players can commandeer enemy tanks and helicopters (in the NES version) to help defeat the enemies. Tanks are immune to bullets but have limited fuel and will explode once the fuel runs out or the tank takes too much damage. Helicopters offer two types of weapons: a spread gun and a cannon, and can fly over water, giving players an advantage in certain sections of the game. The controls allow the player to move in any of eight directions, as the joystick can be rotated to change the direction the character is facing, independent of their movement. The player uses a machine gun in their right hand and throws grenades with their left. However, no shots are fired directly in front of the player. If the player takes too long to progress, the game speeds up by calling for fire support, creating a red spot on the ground that targets the player''s position, urging them to move faster or risk getting overwhelmed. The mission is challenging and requires careful management of movement, weaponry, and vehicles to navigate the increasingly difficult waves of enemies.
