Ninja Golf
Atari 7800, 1989
Ninja Golf is a unique blend of golf and beat ''em up gameplay, where the player controls a ninja who has completed their training and must pass a final test consisting of nine holes of golf. Each hole is a mini-adventure, starting with the player aiming and hitting the golf ball toward the green. The twist is that the path to each hole is filled with hostile creatures, such as gophers, birds, giant frogs, sharks, and snakes, that the ninja must fight or avoid.
The game''s side-scrolling sections combine action and combat, where the player fights ninjas and animals along the way using punches, kicks, and a limited supply of shurikens. Enemies are defeated with a single hit, but the player must navigate the various hazards while also keeping an eye on the golf ball''s trajectory. Along the way, the player can collect power-ups such as health restores, extra lives, more shurikens, invincibility, and an instant warp to the green.
Once the player reaches the green, a dragon boss awaits, and the player must defeat it using shurikens while dodging its fireballs in a third-person battle. The score is influenced by defeating enemies, picking up items, and completing each hole with a limited number of strokes. The game offers multiple difficulty levels, from easy to kamikaze, adding replayability and challenge. Ninja Golf is a quirky fusion of sports and action, combining the patience of golf with the thrill of a beat ''em up.
