Planet Smashers
Atari 7800, 1989
Planet Smashers is a space shooter where the player takes on the role of a lone pilot fighting to save Earth from a fleet of enemy fighters called the "Planet Smashers." The game''s story is relatively typical for its genre, with your ship battling waves of enemies and asteroids while protecting Earth. As you progress, Earthâs shield is constantly under threatâif any enemies or asteroids pass you, the shield loses power, and if itâs completely drained, itâs game over.
The core gameplay revolves around shooting enemy fighters and dodging their fire, while avoiding asteroids. Your ship moves towards the Planet Smashers, with Earth in the background, and you need to stop the fleet before itâs too late. To add more complexity, the player must collect warp capsules scattered throughout the levels to warp to the boss fights. However, thereâs a catch: you need to collect three warp capsules in a specific order, but the game doesnât tell you which ones they are. Shooting a capsule changes its color, but too many shots can destroy them, making it a risky strategy.
In addition to warp capsules, there are other power-ups like weapons (rapid-fire with little apparent damage increase), shields (which replenish lost health), and cloaks (which make you temporarily invisible to enemies). However, using a cloak is not possible during boss fights, which are notably difficult and often result in the playerâs defeat.
