In Dark Chambers, the player navigates a maze-like dungeon from an overhead view, with the goal of reaching the exit on each level to progress to the next. The game features dungeons labeled "A" through "Z", each presenting its own unique layout and challenges. Some areas of the maze are blocked by locked doors, which can be opened by finding keys scattered throughout the dungeon. The player is armed with a bow and arrow, which can be shot in eight different directions. Various types of monsters inhabit the maze, each with unique visual designs, but their behavior is largely the same. When a monster is hit, it "devolves" into a less powerful form, eventually being killed and disappearing. Some monsters are pre-placed in the maze when the level is generated, while others are created by skull-shaped monster generators. If a monster touches the player, it damages their health. Health can be restored by eating food found in the dungeon. Potions, when activated, clear the screen of all monsters, and can either be shot with an arrow or picked up for later use. A special item called the "Heart of Gold" can also be collected to revive fallen party members. Players control their movement and shooting via the joystick and can use keypresses to eat food or activate bombs. When playing with two or more players, the screen scrolls to follow the average location of the group, ensuring that all players remain within view.
