Virtual Bowling
Nintendo Virtual Boy, 1995
Virtual Bowling is an arcade-style sports game that shares similarities with World Bowling on the Game Boy and Nester's Funky Bowling.
It offers three gameplay modes: Standard, Training, and Tournament. In Standard mode, players engage in a quick match, aiming to knock down 10 pins across 10 frames. Training mode allows players to practice by placing pins anywhere on the lane before taking a shot. Tournament mode involves competing in a series of four matches, each with 10 frames, against computer-controlled opponents in various alleys. The objective is to achieve a high score and advance through the tournament.
Before starting, players can enter their name and adjust settings such as the ball's weight, the amount of wax on the lane, and their dominant arm. The game is played from a first-person perspective. Players use the left and right d-pads to adjust their position and aim. They then set the spin and power of the ball using corresponding gauges. The power gauge has two phases: the first determines the ball's power, and the second requires players to match a circle spot to execute the shot accurately. Failure to match the spot during the second phase may cause the ball to veer off the lane. After the ball is released, the camera follows its trajectory down the lane as it attempts to knock down the pins.
