Double Dragon is a side-scrolling beat ''em up game where players control martial artist Billy Lee or his twin brother Jimmy as they fight through the turf of the Black Warriors gang to rescue Billy''s girlfriend, Marian. The game features continuous side-scrolling action, in contrast to the arena-style levels of other games like Kunio-kun. Players can perform a variety of martial arts techniques using a joystick and three action buttons: kick, punch, and jump. These moves can be combined for more powerful attacks like throws and elbow strikes. When playing with a second player, players can team up by grabbing enemies from behind, allowing one player to attack while the other holds them in place. The game features a life gauge that depletes as players take hits, and players must complete each stage within a time limit. If the life gauge runs out, the timer hits zero, or the player falls off the screen, they lose a life. Some enemies carry weapons, such as baseball bats, whips, knives, and dynamite, which can be knocked out of their hands and used by the player. Objects like rocks, oil drums, and boxes also serve as weapons. The Black Warriors gang consists of various members: Williams & Rowper: Common enemies, occasionally armed with weapons. Linda: The only female gang member, sometimes armed with a whip. Strongman enemies: Includes the bald, recurring sub-boss "Zack" and the mohawked "Jack" or "Abobo," a powerful enemy who appears at the end of the first and third stages. Jeff: A Lee brother lookalike, recurring as a mini-boss and underling. Willy: The gang leader and final boss, armed with a machine gun. The game is divided into four stages: a city slum, factory, forest, and the gang’s hideout. Each stage is a long scrolling map, and after defeating a boss, players automatically move to the next area. The final stage is set in the hideout, with traps and enemies leading up to the final confrontation with Willy. At the end of the game, if one player defeats Willy, they win Marian’s affections. However, if both players complete the game, they must face each other in a final fight to determine who wins Marian''s love. Both players’ life gauges are refilled, and extra lives are reset for this final showdown.
