Mario's Tennis
Nintendo Virtual Boy, 1995
Mario's Tennis is a sports game where players control one of seven Mario characters to compete in tennis matches.
The game features a third-person perspective, viewed directly behind the player character, with the Virtual Boy's stereoscopic 3D graphics providing depth perception on the court. This allows players to better judge the distance between the tennis ball and their character. Unlike later games in the Mario Tennis series, which introduced elements like power-ups, special shots, and external obstacles, Mario's Tennis focuses purely on the fundamentals of tennis.
The game offers various modes and customization options. Players can choose from seven characters: Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, Yoshi, Toad, Koopa Troopa, and Donkey Kong Jr., each with unique attributes in terms of speed, power, and racket area. Players can select between a single game or a three-game tournament, with options for singles or doubles matches on easy, normal, or hard difficulties. Although a two-player mode was planned, it was never implemented due to the unreleased cable required for linking two Virtual Boy units.
