Rampage
Atari 7800, 1989
Rampage is an arcade action game where players control three gigantic, mutated monstersâGeorge (a King Kong-like gorilla), Lizzie (a Ymir-like reptile), and Ralph (a giant wolf)âwho must destroy a series of buildings across multiple cities. The monsters were transformed by accidents involving experimental vitamins, radioactive lakes, and food additives. The primary objective is to demolish buildings while fighting off enemy military forces, including helicopters, tanks, and police.
Players can punch, climb, and destroy structures, while also eating civilians and food items to restore health. However, monsters take damage from enemy attacks, bombs, and other hazards, and if they suffer too much damage, they revert back to their human form and begin walking off-screen. Players can continue by transforming back into the monster, but will lose their score in the process.
The game progresses across 128 days and multiple cities, starting in Peoria, Illinois, and ending in Plano, Illinois. Each city provides a "mega vitamin bonus" at the end, which fully heals the monsters and gives a points boost. The game resets after 768 days, looping back to Day 1. Throughout the game, players face a mix of helpful and harmful items, including food, money, bombs, and photographers who can stun the monsters. The goal is to cause as much destruction as possible while avoiding damage, with the game rewarding players for rescuing civilians in distress.
