Commando

In Commando, the player controls a soldier named Super Joe, who is dropped into a hostile jungle by helicopter and must fight his way out against waves of enemy soldiers. Armed with an assault rifle (which has unlimited ammunition) and a limited supply of hand grenades, Super Joe faces a relentless onslaught. The assault rifle can be fired in any of the eight directions that Super Joe faces, while the grenades can only be thrown vertically, regardless of his orientation. Although grenades have a limited supply, they can clear obstacles and deal with multiple enemies at once when thrown strategically. At the end of each level, the screen halts, and Super Joe must face a group of soldiers streaming from a gate or fortress. These soldiers are ordered out by a cowardly officer, who immediately runs away. If the player shoots him in the back, bonus points are awarded. Along the way, the player can also rescue prisoners of war being transported by the enemy. Certain home console versions of Commando feature hidden underground bunkers that can only be accessed with grenades. Inside these bunkers, players can rescue additional prisoners. Some versions, like the NES port, also include upgrades such as a more powerful machine gun, an unlimited grenade supply, and "glasses" that reveal hidden bunkers. However, these upgrades are lost when the player loses a life. Extra lives are awarded at 10,000 points and every 50,000 points up to 960,000 points. After reaching this score, no more lives are given. The game continues until either Super Joe is killed or the player survives 140 levels, which ends the game.
