Mario Bros.
Atari 7800, 1988
Mario Bros. is an arcade platformer where players control the plumber brothers, Mario and Luigi, tasked with clearing enemies from sewer-themed levels. The objective is to defeat all the enemies in each stage by flipping them onto their backs and then kicking them off the screen. Players navigate platforms with pipes at the corners and a central POW block that can flip all enemies on the screen.
Enemies include the Shellcreeper, Sidestepper, Fighter Fly, Slipice, and floating Fireballs. The POW block can be used three times per stage to flip enemies, but later levels introduce additional hazards like falling icicles. The game features wraparound mechanics, where players and enemies reappear on the opposite side of the screen if they exit one side.
Players lose a life if they touch an unflipped enemy, fireball, or icicle. The game ends when all lives are lost, though bonus rounds allow for additional points and lives. The goal is to clear each level by defeating all enemies before time runs out.
