Virtual Boy Wario Land
Nintendo Virtual Boy, 1995
Virtual Boy Wario Land is a side-scrolling platformer featuring Wario as the main character. The game begins with Wario vacationing in the Awazon river basin and relaxing at the Aldegara waterfall. After being disturbed by a beaver, Wario notices unusual creatures entering behind the waterfall and decides to investigate. He discovers a cave filled with treasure but collapses underground and must navigate his way back to the surface.
Players guide Wario through 14 floors of non-linear levels. The objective in each level is to collect treasures and find a key to unlock the elevator to the next floor. Wario can jump or run into enemies to defeat them, and stunned enemies can be picked up and thrown at other foes or clouds that release coins. He can also use a shoulder charge or body slam to attack enemies and break blocks. Wario has access to three power-ups: a bull hat that enhances his strength, an eagle hat that grants him the ability to fly and attack from the air, and a fire-breathing dragon hat. Combining the eagle and dragon hats into the "King Dragon" hat gives Wario all three abilities.
Wario can switch between the background and foreground using jump pads, which is essential for exploring, finding items, and avoiding enemies and obstacles that move between planes. If Wario takes damage, he shrinks and loses his power until he picks up a clove of garlic or a hat. Taking further damage while small results in losing a life and all collected coins for that level. Every three floors, Wario faces off against bosses that utilise the Virtual Boy’s stereoscopic 3D effects. Between floors, there are mini-games where Wario can gamble the loot he has collected. Each level contains one of ten hidden artifacts in secret chambers, and the game's ending is influenced by the number of artifacts and coins Wario collects.
