Meltdown
Atari 7800, 1990
Meltdown is a shooter game in which the player must protect 20 nuclear reactor cores from being damaged by Sparkx, a type of enemy that threatens the reactor''s integrity. The player can choose to play solo or with a friend and select between novice or expert difficulty levels at the start of the game.
The objective is to shoot down Sparkx before they can reach and damage the reactor cores. If a Sparkx makes it past the player''s shots, a barrier temporarily appears to offer some protection, but the player can only have a maximum of four barriers on screen at any given time. Sparkx can bounce off the barriers, creating additional strategic opportunities for defense.
Power-ups, including power crystals and bonus blocks, occasionally appear on the screen, providing the player with upgrades or benefits. As the game progresses, the playfield shrinks, reducing the available area for shooting and making the game more challenging.
The game continues until either all the reactor cores are destroyed, or the player successfully defends all 20 reactors. If the player survives a round, they are awarded a password to continue at a later time. If the player successfully protects all reactors, the game ends with a victory.
