2 in 1 - Hash Blocks + Eagle Plan
Watara Supervision, 1992
Released in 1992, this multicart paired a mandatory puzzle clone with a surprisingly ambitious aerial shooter, making it one of the more popular choices for new owners of the handheld.
Every 90s handheld needed a solid puzzle game to survive, and Hash Blocks fills that role perfectly. Similar to Columns for the Sega Genesis, your goal is to rotate groups of three shapes in order to make lines of four.
The standout title of the pair, however, is Eagle Plan, a vertical-scrolling shooter that puts you in the cockpit of a fighter jet. Unlike some of the system's more sluggish action titles, Eagle Plan feels much faster and more frantic. It features multiple weapon upgrades and some genuinely large boss sprites that push the 8-bit hardware to its limit. It’s widely considered one of the better shooters for the system, even if the difficulty spikes are brutal.
What makes this cartridge particularly interesting is the stark contrast in styles. Hash Blocks is a slow brain-teaser, while Eagle Plan tries to be a high-octane arcade experience. This cartridge was a great showcase of the system's range, proving the Supervision could handle both thoughtful puzzle-solving and a twitch shooter without breaking a sweat.
Both games also make the most of the hardware's four-shade grayscale palette. Eagle Plan, in particular, uses clever dithering to create the illusion of clouds and water, showing that the developers were starting to master the limited visual capabilities of the budget hardware. Ultimately, this bundle provides the bread and butter of 90s handheld gaming: a perfect, battery-friendly puzzler for short trips, and a challenging shooter for when you actually wanted to sit down and play.
