SD Gundam Dimension War is a tactical role-playing game set in the Gundam universe.

Players navigate a fleet of robots and ships on a grid-based map, aiming to eliminate enemies scattered across the terrain. The goal is to complete all eight levels without losing the fleet. Enemies are positioned at the top of the map, while players start from the bottom. To advance to the next level, players must destroy specific enemy battle cruisers, though not every enemy needs to be defeated. In combat, players can choose between two options: indirect attacks, which allow for long-range firing, or direct attacks, which are riskier but more powerful. Engaging an enemy shifts the game into a combat scenario where players use either a ranged laser cannon or a melee laser sword. Combat involves maneuvering robots between the foreground and background until one side is defeated. When battling enemy cruisers, the game switches to a third-person perspective, requiring players to fire enough shots to destroy the cruiser.

An autopilot feature is available, enabling the AI to handle battles automatically. Players can save their progress in one of three available save slots and return to the game later.
