Impossible Mission
Atari 7800, 1987
In Impossible Mission, the player takes on the role of a secret agent tasked with stopping the evil genius Professor Elvin Atombender, who is believed to be tampering with national security computers. The mission requires the player to race against the clock to collect and reassemble pieces of a password that will grant access to Atombender''s control room. Along the way, the player must avoid deadly robots and navigate through a series of rooms and obstacles.
The game is set in a large, multi-room environment where the player searches furniture for puzzle pieces. These pieces are needed to complete the password puzzle, which is essential for unlocking Atombender''s control room. In addition to collecting password pieces, the player can also activate certain rewards, such as resetting moveable platforms and freezing enemy robots temporarily. The game also features bonus puzzles that provide additional rewards.
The enemies in Impossible Mission come in two varieties: robots and electrified hovering balls. The robots have cylindrical bodies, with some stationary and others patrolling specific patterns or actively hunting the player. Some robots use short-range death rays, while others are always aware of the player''s position, regardless of sight. The hovering electrified balls chase the player and are equally deadly.
The player has a limited amount of time—six hours in-game—to collect all 36 pieces of the password puzzle. If the player dies, 10 minutes are deducted from the total time. The puzzle pieces must be assembled in groups of four, but they are randomized each time the player plays, and the pieces may be in the wrong orientation, requiring the player to use mirror images to correctly place them. Once the player assembles the nine-letter password, they can enter Professor Atombender''s control room and complete the mission.
